Who is Linda Southworth?
Linda is a UK trained osteopathic practitioner who has over 26 years of experience helping patients overcome their conditions and rapidly return to a pain free life. Now relocated on Canada’s west coast of British Columbia, near Sechelt, she continues to help people using traditional, time proven osteopathic techniques that are unique to her profession, and is one of only a small handful of osteopathic practitioners in the province of British Columbia.
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy as a practice was founded in the late 1800’s by Andrew Taylor Still, an MD who believed that treating the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, was necessary. He believed in treating the source of the problem and not the symptoms, using hands-on diagnosis and treatment. He held that, "medicine should begin with the patient, continue with patient, and end with the patient."
Unlike some other therapies, osteopathy does not stop at the spine as the main source of pain and disease, searching not only the entire body for the source of any ailments, but external influences as well, such as stress, depression, etc.
What to expect
Your first visit to an Osteopathic practitioner will probably require a full consultation and examination, including observation of your movements, while the Osteopath uses palpation to diagnose your condition. This could consist of (but is not limited to) knots in muscles and fascia, joints clicking, and asymmetry between the sides of your body.
The recommendations your Osteopathic practitioner may make could include changes to your movement, diet, and/or sleeping habits, plus stretches and specific exercises along with a course of gentle osteopathic manipulative treatments. If she feels that your condition merits another opinion, she will rapidly refer you to the appropriate specialist, and work with them to ensure your health remains everyone’s priority throughout the whole treatment process.
European and Canadian Osteopaths
Unlike US trained osteopaths, who are MDs extensively trained in the use of prescription drugs, most European and Canadian trained osteopaths cannot prescribe drugs, but are highly specialised at the art of gentle and careful osteopathic adjustment, along with the hands-on treatment of injured/problematic areas of the body. Four years of full-time study in this highly specialised area of manipulative therapy enables them to become masters of adjustment, and highly effective and successful at enabling their patients to achieve a pain-free outcome in extremely rapid time frames.
